Cherub Choir - The Boy & Girl Choristers - Christ’s Church Choir

Christ's Church Choir at St Mary's

The Christ's Church Choir at the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in New York City
on the Feast of Epiphany, 2008.

Christ’s Church Choir

Rehearsals:
Thursday Evenings, 7:30 - 9:30 pm

The Christ's Church Choir is a semi-professional ensemble that sings at weekly services of the Holy Eucharist and Morning Prayer. Made up of six professional singers from New York City and Connecticut, as well as a very talented cadre of twenty-four adult volunteers from the city of Rye and surrounding communities, the Christ's Church Choir boasts a wide spectrum of the choral repertoire, with special emphasis on the music of the English Cathedrals. In addition to singing the Psalms to Anglican chant or plainsong tones, the choir provides two anthems or motets each week, as well as occasional settings of the Mass Ordinary. On most Sundays of the year, the adults of the choir are joined by the Boy and Girl Choristers, who sing the treble line. This intergenerational choir is a vibrant and joyful group. In August of 2008, the choir returned from its first international tour, singing Evensong at Salisbury, Wells, and Chichester Cathedrals, as well as making an official pilgrimage to the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Rye, Sussex. The choir has already been invited back by Salisbury Cathedral to take up residence for a week during the summer of 2011. In the spring of 2009, the choir will travel to sing at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, as well as the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The Choir is open to all singers who have the ability to read music. If you are interested in joining, please contact the Organist and Choirmaster, Andrew Sheranian.

Children’s Choirs

In the words of the Rector, “we welcome people of all ages, from newborns to people in their nineties”. Children make up a large portion of the parish. In addition to Sunday school, the music program involves the children in the liturgy through sacred song.

Cherub Choir (Kindergarten through 2nd Grade)

Rehearsals:
Thursdays, 3:30 - 4:00 pm

The Cherub Choir exists to instill a love and excitement for singing sacred music in the hearts and minds of young children, and to prepare them to eventually join the ranks of the older choristers. All children, regardless of parish affiliation, are welcome. Rehearsals take place for thirty minutes on Thursday afternoons.

The Boy & Girl Choristers (3rd through 12th Grade)

Rehearsals:
Mondays, 4:30 - 6:00 pm (Girls)
Tuesdays, 4:30 - 6:00 pm (Boys)
Thursdays, 4:30 - 6:00 pm (Boys & Girls Together)

The Boy and Girl Choristers of the Christ's Church Choir sing treble on most Sundays when school is in session. Choristers learn the basics of music reading, theory, vocal production, liturgy and music history. Great emphasis is placed on the understanding of the meaning of the music. In addition to working hard, the life of a chorister is also very rewarding and fun - especially when the choir travels to other churches to sing. For instance, in the 2008-2009 season, the choir will undertake a weekend trip to Washington, D.C., to sing at our National Cathedral. Parents of interested children should contact the Andrew, the Organist and Choirmaster. It is never too late to join the choir; we are always willing to welcome newcomers.
